Chapter 41: Herbert is now home and Pip is now forced to talk about his situation with Herbert, Pip and Herbert have now both agreed that they will no longer use Magwitch’s Money, Pip has also agreed to take Magwitch abroad where he will be safe from the Police and they will part ways with him.
Chapter 42: Magwitch then proceeds to tell his story, Magwitch was orphaned as a child and lived a life of crime. His earliest memory of stealing was turnips to feed himself, As a young man Magwitch met a criminal named Compeyson and soon fell under his power. Compeyson had driven another accomplice named Arthur into alcoholism and madness, He said he was driven to depression by a memory of a wealthy women they had stole from. Magwitch then reveals that once they were both caught Compeyson had snitched on him to get a light sentence on him, Magwitch wanted revenge on the night when Pip found his convict in the ditch it was Magwitch fighting with Compeyson. Herbert tells Pip that Arthur was Miss Havisham’s half brother and Compeyson was the one who stood up Miss Havisham at the wedding.
Chapter 43: Pip feels now that he must leave Estella forever, Pip has a unpleasant encounter with Drummle at the Inn, Pip plans to travel to Satis house to see Miss Havisham and Estella one last time.
Chapter 44: Miss Havisham admitted to playing along to make him believe she was his secret benefactor, Miss Havisham will now be helping Herbert now that Pip doesn’t want the money anymore. Pip makes a speech tells Estella how much he loved her. Estella then says that she has agreed to marry Drummle. Pip now feeling sad walks all the way back to London Wemmick gives Pip a note saying “Dont’t go home”
Chapter 45: Pip spends at the night at the Hummums Inn, the next day Pip asks Wemmick about the note, Wemmick then says that Compeyson is now pursing Magwich, Wemmick then says that Herbert has hidden Magwich at Clara’s house. Pip then leaves to go there.
